Review: Any car repair manual should do three important things: 1. Give detailed break down on all systems 2. Give the technical
information accurately 3. Give clear repair advice to the owner.
This brand of manual did all three, except
it holds back and does give complete
info from the three categories.
1. It doesnt show complete technical photos of every aspect of the vehicle
for example the ignition system....
2. On the technical data of vehicle it
skimped on the clear and concise electrical
diagrams.....
3. On the repair instructions it assumes
your a beginner mechanic....
However these manuals are still a necessity
for any car owner you must have this inconjunction with your owners manual
for one thing these manuals do is give you
the maintance programme you need to
know to keep your vehicle up.
Just that knowledge alone is worth the price...but never use the manual to self repair yourself unless you are a beginning
mechanic, because the books will never show you the correct steps in sequence
or tell you all the secrets of self repair,
(even when augumented with Scotty Kilmer videos).....you always need the
mechanic...

Review: Gently used and well worth the low price.

However....

I bought it to help replace my hand brake cable. I wanted to know if I had to pull up the carpet in the back of the car to guide the cable to the brake handle, like you have to in the newer Saturn Ion. I wanted to avoid a job that involved that. This book illustrated the cable replacement but didn't mention pulling up the carpet. So, I did the job, and found I had to pull up the carpet. There was no information on doing that in this book that I could see. So, I used U-Tube to see how this was done. Pulling up the carpet was actually pretty easy, but, it would have been nice if the book had illustrated this.

And, it would have been nice if the book had discussed the several clamps and the grommet needed for this job.

But, I got the cable job done, and this book helped, so yeah me.

Review: Seriously it has changed my life. I have saved about $3000 in car repair and maintenance costs since I got this book. I have learned a ton about cars in the process and I have also learned much about proper safety when working on cars. You may be surprised, like I was, to find that you father who fixed everything in his car, broke many basic safety rules. I went from being barely able to change my oil, to replacing the air-intake-manifold gasket on my car (a $600 procedure).

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, my new-found knowledge has helped my identify the car repair shops that scamming people for their money. I have seen (caught) mechanics recommend $2700 dollar procedures when only a single wire need to be replaced. I am a young nerdy looking college kid, so any mechanic immediately assumes I know nothing about cars. This assumption used to be correct, but not anymore. I barely take my car to a mechanic anymore and when I do I know I'm not getting screwed. That is a great feeling.

Review: I've been using Haynes and Chilton manuals for decades, and they are decent manuals for the home mechanic. The Haynes manuals are a bit better than Chilton with details and images, but multi-year/model books like this one assume you sort-of know what you're doing before you start. If you don't know the difference between a box-end wrench and a ratchet... you should invest in a good mechanic, not a book.

This particular book covers SOHC and DOHC engines, and is quite comprehensive in engine and transmission specs, and most importantly, contains correct (and comprehensive) torque values!

Docking one star because this book does not have any information on sunroofs and the electrical specs are lacking details and variations between some models.

Review: This is a useful book to have around the house especially if you can find one at a reasonable price. I found information on most things I have wanted to repair on my car. The chapters are divided up by car systems (electrical, emission control, etc.) There is an index to help locate pages for many things. If something is missing in the index you can generally find it by going to the beginning of an seemingly appropriate chapter and scanning the chapter contents for the topic you are looking for.

The procedures tend to be a bit concise with occasional flipping of pages needed to complete steps that have already been covered in a different procedure. Also I have often found that the photos leave me scratching my head wondering where the part actually is. Sometimes a photo was referenced that didn't exist. For most repairs I need to look on line for more thorough instructions, but then the book is handy to have out at the car to refer to while I am working on it.

Review: Manual is very helpful for DIY "home" mechanics. The manual has saved me the cost taking the car to the shop. For example, I confidently (with the manual of course) changed the oil and oil filter, replaced a radiator, and recently changed spark plugs. My Saturn S-series is a 1999 vintage with SOHC engine. Although some content did not currently reflect my specific car, it conveyed all the principles of car's functions. For example, the EGR on my car is a linear electronically-controlled EGR, but the manual goes into detail on vacuum version. Much of the pictures helped too. In summary, the manual is a perfect reference and confidence-builder for the novice do-it-at-home mechanic. The best price for this manual was here--the Amazon Marketplace.

Review: I like that it includes the wiring diagrams. And I find the troubleshooting section in the front of the book handy to point you to where to start looking for your problems and where to find the section to cure it.
