Title: Clever comedies

Review: Clever comedies that would certainly make for a nice evening at the theater, and beautifully translated here. But the operas by Messrs. Rossini and Mozart raise them to a whole new level—one of the few examples where an adaptation improves upon the original!

Title: A poor version, but still a classic ...

Review: How bad can a certain version of a classic be?  It's got to be fairly true to the original, right?  So, I guess this one suffices, but there are real errors!  You as the reader do a double-take, and go, Wait, what? thinking maybe this is the effect of the archaic French or something, or some witty wordplay, but then realize, no, there is simply a word missing from this sentence!  There are also grammatical errors, and typos.  But, this is still a classic and you can enjoy it for that reason. Examples: (1) "The effect is to makes* her sing more slowly ..." and (2) "It's intolerable that one persons* thinks he has the right to open someone else's letters." (3) "I want lock the front door after you." (4) "But it* the sense that really mattered ..."

Title: Intensly interesting plays, wonderful translation

Review: I love the operas based on the first two plays and was eager to compare with the original sources. The plays, especially through the brilliant translation, add a fascinating dimension to the stories. They explore human relations in extremely witty ways. The characters become more realistic as more facts about their personalities come out (particularly the facts about Cherubino, which were better anticipated in the play version of Marriage). The third play (Guilty Mother), the one that did not lead to a popular opera, fully explains Cherubino and ties most of the other loose ends together in a surprising but satisfying manner.

It is hard to understand how such a valuable and enjoyable collection of these plays could be sold for such a low price.

Review: Since I have sung Figaro in Barbiere, and the Count in Le Nozze, I loved reading the plays, and then the final play, along with reading the biography of Beaumarchais. Love it.

Review: For any Mozart/Rossini opera fan who wants to read the book from which

the "Barber or Seville" and the "Marriage of Figaro "came from, this

book is for you. It is a good background to understanding these works.

Best of all, the concluding play in the Trilogy "The Grieving Widow"

brings to close the story of these beloved opera characters. It's light

reading and fun.
